Ogawa Kazumasa vintage photograph entitled Samisen or Banjo. a Woman in traditional costume plays traditional Japanese instrument the Samisen or Banjo.

1896 Caption - The “Samisen” (Banjo) - Every nation has its peculiar music. Foremost among Japanese musical instruments are the Koto and Samisen - the former being a thirteen stringed instrument, the latter a three stringed. The Samisen is by far the commonest and most popular of the two. An expert player on it shows a marvellous dexterity in producing the variety of tones. The head and neck of the Samisen is made of rose wood or cheaper materials according to prices, while the square shaped body is covered with cat’s skin. It is played with a piece of ivory or wood, triangular in shape with its apex considerably prolonged for the convenience of handling.
