All the buildings of the Campo dei Miricoli the Field of Miracles lean beacause of their shallow foundations and sandy silt that they re built on The leaning tower is just one of the splendid religious buildings set here it began tilting sideways after the third storey was added in 1274 Started in 1173 it was completed in 1350 Recent engineering and construction inventions has seen the tower having its tilt corrected by 38cm 14 and was re opened to the public in December 2001 Six of the towers eight storeys consist of galleries with delicate marble arcading around the central core The bell chamber at the top of the tower which houses seven bells is the smaller in diameter than the other seven storeys bringing the height to 54 5 mtrs 179ft The Duomo which was started in 1063 and the baptisry 1152 1284 along with the Campo Santo cemetery which began in 1278 have a combination of Moorish Arabaesque and Romanesque architecture and are visited by millions of tourists each year
