Dinosaur and fossil footprints, artwork. Fossils appear as rock slowly forms around objects buried in mud. As the rock forms, the shape and anatomy of buried animals and plants can be preserved, including tracks such as these footprints. Trace fossils (ichnofossils) have their own taxonomy as it can be difficult to link them to a known species. The dinosaur shown here is a theropod, a group of bipedal dinosaurs that walked upright on their hind legs and were carnivorous predators. The large theropods dominated from the Early Jurassic until the end of the Cretaceous (around 200 million to 65 million years ago).
