Plastic bottles, washed up on Balos Beach, on Gramvousa peninsula, in north western Crete, Greece. The beach is famous for its white sands and turquoise waters and is a protected nature reserve. More than 10% of plastic disgarded every year ends up in the ocean. These bottles can take up to 500 years to disintegrate. Just 15% of the plastic in the Mediterranean washes up on the beach. In May 2011, the EU started a project, paying fisherman to catch plastic in the Mediterranean.
