Sugar-sweetener experiment. Equipment for an experiment to compare the energy of sugar (left) and a sweetener (right). Both are granulated. Samples will be burnt in the bottle tops (centre). The test tube with water and a thermometer are used to measure the increase in temperature caused by the burning of the samples. Both sugar and sweetener have about the same energy content, but sweeteners are less dense so the same volume will release less energy and produce a smaller temperature rise. This reaction can be directly compared to the release of energy in the body as sugars are oxidised in body cells during respiration.
