When the warships from the convict stationsin Australia and the whalers from the South Seas fore-gathered at Bay of Islands year after year, cutting sparsfrom the splendid pine forests and replenishing theirlarders with pork and vegetables, they saw brigs andschooners of beautiful proportions pottering in and outof the bays of the North, some flying the flag of themission station, some the ensign which England hadpresented to the federated chiefs. Shipbuilding was animportant industry in the far North. From these beauti-ful land-locked harbours and tidal rivers sallied forthdozens of small vessels on their maiden voyages to theSouth Seas, to Australia, to China even, and the Pacificslope of A COUNTRY OF ENGINEERING 279 After the settlement, too, the colonial brig was theprincipal ocean liner and coastwise trader for many along day. Later Auckland took the industry as her own,and the yards on the shores of the Waitemata continuedto turn out small vessels for colonial owners. In thefifties they commenced to build steamers. The GovernorWynyard was not a great success, and she went over toAustralia to labour out her existence in Port City of Auckland failed too; and one scarcelywonders. She was designed to burn wood fuel in aspecially constructed grate, and the smoke passed sadlyoff through a brick chimney ! On one voyage of fiftymiles, having consumed the whole of her cargo, she putin al a way port for more fuel, and arrived at Auck-land two days late. The appliances were primitive inthe last degree.
