Adrenal gland tumour, gross specimen. This is an adenoma (bottom left) of the adrenal gland (C shape at centre). The adrenal glands are situated over the top of each kidney. Although benign (non-cancerous), the growth can cause problems as it may affect production of the hormones cortisol, aldosterone or androgens. In this case, an over-production of aldosterone has resulted in Conn syndrome. Aldosterone causes increase in sodium and water retention and potassium excretion in the kidneys, leading to arterial hypertension (high blood pressure).
