Purple Finch (Haemorhous purpureus) on a log, Sacramento County California USA

Three species in the Haemorhous genus are ordinarily found in North America. This Purple Finch is distinguished by the curved culmen (the upper bill) and in the male, the overall rosy color including the back and wings. Female Purple Finches have a bolder pattern on the face than either the House Finch (Haemorhous mexicanus) or Cassin's Finch (Haemorhous casinii). Geography can also aid identification because Cassin's Finch is more likely at higher elevations than the other two North American members of this genus.
