Child flanked by man and woman: detail of one of the colourful biblical artworks painted, between 1713 and 1715, in grandiose but rustic Baroque style on the planks of the boat-shaped ceiling vault covering the nave of the fortified medieval Eglise Saint-Martin (Church of St Martin) at Lévignacq in the Landes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France.

Lévignacq, Landes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France: detail of one of the vibrant biblical artworks painted in the early 18th century on the wooden planks of the boat-shaped ceiling vault covering the nave of the village church, the Eglise Saint-Martin. The painting features two adults flanking a young child who, while held by the man, holds on to the woman’s wrist. The ceiling ‘hull’ was decorated between 1713 and 1715 with three large biblical scenes painted in illusionist perspective and in a grandiose but rustic Counter-Reformation Baroque style. The colourful depictions of the Nativity and Adoration of the Shepherds, the Trinity, and the Transfiguration of Christ are probably by a Bordeaux-based painter named Jean or Jacques Fautier, a member of the Paris Academy of Art, perhaps assisted by other regional or local artists. The Transfiguration painting is loosely based on a work, now in the Vatican Museums, by High Renaissance artist Raphael. The church, in the Pays de Born countryside of the Landes des Gascogne, close to the French Atlantic coast, is filled with many other artworks, including remains of 15th century frescoes in the choir vault and numerous paintings of saints, popes, cardinals, bishops and prophets by later unknown hands.
