Mr. Heil was formerly withthe Falk Co. and has been in thebusiness of welding rail jointsfor the past eight years, statingthat he made the first cast-weldedjoints for the Citizen^ Street , of St. Louis, in 1894. with the Falk years, being assistant Heil joint is made from 12 to 14 in. long, 8 to 10 in. wideand in depth extends 2 in, below the bottom of the rail, and is rec-tangular in shape which is a radical departure from former prac-tice in casting rail joints. The reasons for adapting this shapearc: First, the plane side and bottom permit the paving blockslo lie properly fitted about the joint, and in consequence any vilira-. HEIL, The Columbus Railway Co. is considerable diffi-culty in getting steel rails for a number of proposed improvementsand extensions that have been planned for this season. The strikeof the steel workers complicates the situation. Car No. 40 on the Dayton, Springfield & Urbana Street R. R,ran into an open switch near Springfield about 9 oclock in theevening of August 2d and struck a number of freight cars, injuring25 persons, three of them seriously. Ten of the passengers suf-fered broken legs. An investigation of the switch showed that ithad been locked open, which is believed to have been the deed ofsome miscreant. The officials are making every effort to placethe responsibility for the accident. Representatives of the Chillicothc, Mt. Sterling & ColumbusElectric Railway Co. are endeavoring to persuade General Man-ager Fisher of the Columbus, London & Springfield Ry. to takeup the work of financing and building their proposed line.
