Carl von Steinheil (1801-1870). 1868 illustration of the German physicist, inventor, engineer and astronomer Carl August von Steinheil. Steinheil studied astronomy and became a professor of mathematics and physics at the University of Munich (1832 to 1849). During that period, his inventions included innovations in photography and telegraphy. From 1849, he worked on telegraphy in Austria, and from 1851 in Switzerland. In 1854, he founded an astronomical instrument making company.
