The early jottings were somewhatexpanded by another hand on the occasion of a memorialservice commemorating the lOOth birthday of ^irs. PhebeNorthrup Washburn in 1867. Again, in 1873-4, also in1883-4- ti: 9ri- 7, when the writer was in the United Stateson furlough, a little was added to them. So far, these geuea-looical studies were the work of leisure hours and vervfragmentary. It was not till about three years ago thatthe identity of Bbene/.er Washburn of New Milford, Conn.,with Bbenezer, son of .Joseph Washburn-^ of Bridgewater,Mass., was established. Since then, enquiries have takena wider range, both in regard to the ancestry of the familyand to Kbene/.ers descendants. From the beg
