It is easy enough for some gradesof mankind to cheer with frenzy the appear-ance of a victor, no matter who he be; anda Chinese host would have been receivedwith just as much acclaim as we were, hadthey come as conquering heroes. The housesof the aristocrats sent us no demonstrationof feeling one way or the other, with a singlestartling and highly dramatic exception. Wehad turned from the Calle Mirasol into theCalle Candalaria, and the head of the columnhad almost reached the Plaza band had just crashed into The Stars.
