Liverpool Telescope. Engineers constructing the Liverpool Telescope, the world's largest (as of 2006) robotic telescope. It is a 2-metre optical telescope owned by the Astrophysics Research Institute (ARI) of Liverpool John Moores University (JMU), Liverpool, UK. It is operated by remote control, and can be swiftly turned to point at a target, making it ideal for studying short- lived events like supernovae and gamma ray bursts, or tracking near-Earth objects such as asteroids and comets. It can also be used by schoolchildren. It was manufactured and constructed by Telescope Technologies, a subsidiary company of JMU. The telescope operates on La Palma, in the Canary Islands. It took its first pictures in August 2003, and began operating in January 2004.
