As the volume of gas increases, the gas-flameat the end of the pipe gets hotter and roars more, but does noharm. It is my practice to let this gas burn at the iron-notch BLOWING-IN A BLAST-FURNACE. 107 for 4 lir. after starting the blast, and then to pull the pipe andshut the notch. Shutting the iron-notch is one of the critical stages of blowing-in; but if everything is in readiness the work can be done in. 1«t^
