These families intermarriedor allied themselves to the families of Court painters, sculptors orengravers, and must have formed a rather pleasant artistic circle oftheir own, a circle, however, jealously guarded against the entrance ofoutsiders. Liberal Bruand is a case in point. Born about 1635, he was theson of Sebastian Bruand, General des Bailments et des Fonts etChaussees de France, and M.
