Acute paronychia. Close-up of fingers showing acute paronychia. This is an acute inflammation and infection of the tissues surrounding the fingernails. Acute paronychia usually results from infection by bacteria, although a yeast such as Candida albicans can also be responsible. The affected area becomes extremely painful, and sensitive to the slightest touch. Generally such infections are treated with antibiotics, but in severe cases surgery may be necessary to drain the area under sterile conditions.
