Kongobuji is Koyasan Shingon-shu Buddhism, headquarters Temple.
Ohiroma. Important rituals and religious ceremonies are held here in front of the Buddha Hall to the side. The sliding doors are decorated with paintings of cranes attributed to Kano Tanyu. In 816, the founder of Shingon Buddhism in Japan, Kobo Daishi Kukai (774-835) begun the planning and construction of this Buddhist monastic complex deep in the mountains of Koyasan as a place for meditation far from worldly distractions. The Dai (Great) Garan has served as the focal point of the study, training, and rituals of Shingon Buddhist monks from the ninth century to the present day.
