Narrow canal in Utrecht The Netherlands. Kromme Nieuwegracht with private bridges.

Narrow canal in Utrecht The Netherlands. Kromme Nieuwegracht with private bridges. In Roman times part of the original river Rhine. In Medieval times used as moat around the Abbey of St Peter. This current form dates from 1390-1393. The Kromme Nieuwegracht is the Northern part of the Nieuwegracht which ends at the Pausdam (Pope's Dam) where it veers to the right into the very narrow Kromme Nieuwegracht. Many monuments line this canal, most with their own private bridges, which make the canal difficult to navigate, but popular with kayaks.
