In this species the adult female is nearly one-fifth of aninch long, of a light dull-yellow color, its body being cov-ered with a whitish powder. In Fig. 429 it is representedmagnified. The lateral appendages, which are seventeen innumber, are long, the posterior ones on each side being verylong, equalling, and sometimes exceeding, the entire lengthof the body. In the larval state the male and the femaleare very much alike, but as they approach maturity strikingdifferences appear. The female surrounds herself withcottony material, amid which the young cluster for sometime after birth. The male larva forms for itself a littlecottony sac or cocoon, in wiiich it changes to a pupa, fromwhich the winged insect is produced. This is shown, muchmagnified, in Fig. 430.
