Red-legged partridges (Alectoris rufa) on a haystack. Red-legged partridges, also known as the French partridge, are native to western continental Europe. It has been introduced to England, New Zealand and parts of North America as a game bird. Red-legged partridges inhabit open fields and stony ground, feeding on seeds and roots, and, when young, insects. It is usually found in groups, except during the breeding season when it is found in pairs. When startled it prefers to run rather than fly. Photographed in Kent, UK, in January.
