Relationsliips.—C. rhodomelas is not closely related to any known species. The heavy crushing teeth and the long lower pectoral lobe distinguish this species from all others with which it ma}^ be FiGUEE 36.—Caeepeoctus homopteel's. Body slender; depth in length without caudal; head Teeth coarsely trilobed, the lateral lobes nearly as large as the central lobe. Gill slit extending down in front of three pectoral rays. Anterior dorsal rays increasing gradually in length. Lower lobe of the pectoral elongate, reaching past the origin of the anal fin, four- thirds times the head. Disk small, triangular; in the head.
