Brian Quinonez, representing the 224th Sustainment Brigade, was leading the way from the start of the 2013 California Army National Guard’s Best Warrior Competition’s Unknown Distance Ruck March event, Sept. 11, 2012, at Camp San Luis Obispo. He was followed closely by Spc. Sheridan Low of the 49th Military Police Brigade, Spc Ryan Ziegler of the 100th Troop Command, Pfc. Kevin Palomera of the 40th Infantry Division, and taking in fifth place at the halfway and highest point was the first NCO of the group, Sgt. Luis Mendoza, of the 100th Troop Command. The actual distance will be revealed later. The troops enjoyed a low hanging fog and chilly temperatures to keep them cool until the final portion when the sun began to burn through. Each ruck was weighed at the beginning for a minimum amount and again at the end. Some carried just water and others had special snacks to keep the fuel burning.
