The dominant stag LONDON ETHEREAL images show a Royal Red deer stag bellowing with all his might was captured in Richmond Park, London, on October 21st. The Royal stag was "bolving" or bellowing to try and demonstrate his strength to other stags who might pose a threat to his harem of hinds (female deer). This stag is considered ?Royal? because its antlers have 12 points. Having a harem of hinds means that this is a dominant one compared to the others, but being the king of the castle is not as easy. He spends a huge amount of his time chasing away challengers and preventing his hinds from straying. This stag is mature, as shown by the points of his three-foot-wide antlers. Wildlife photographer Sue Pooley was 98 feet away from the animal when she snapped these pictures using her Nikon D750 camera with a Sigma 150-600mm contemporary lens. ?It took around thirty minutes to get these shots as I don't like to get too close and make the deer feel too surrounded,? she said. ?I just hope my images give people enjoyment to see such majestic animals and their incredible behaviour during the rutting This rutting season starts in September each year and lasts till early November. However, experts say that the duration is now changing, possibly due to climate change. Deer hormones react to darker days and colder weather, which is what triggers the rut, leading to the rut lasting later into the year in warmer Autumn weather. ENDS
