I ALYTH S a manufacturing village in the parish of its name,which is mostly in this county, and extends into thatof Forfar, 62 miles n. of Edinburgh, 20 N. of Perth,15 N. by w. of Dundee, 12 w, of Forfar, 5 from Blair-gowrie, and 3 from Meigle, pleasantly situate at thefoot of a hill. The manufacture of brown linens iscarried on here to a considerable extent, and there isa flax spinning mill. It was erected into a burgh ofbarony by James III: the baron bailie holds a courtmonthly. The parish is divided into two considerabledistricts, by the hills of Alyth Loyal and Blair, a conspicuous point of land, rises abouttwelve hundred feet above the level of the sea. The parish is watered by the i iver Isla, and .several smallerstreams. The southern district, lyingin the strath, isabout four miles long a
