His father emi-grated to Pennsylvania and afterwards to Piqua, Ohio. YoungRowan entered Miami University in 1825, and in 1826 was ap-pointed Midshipman in the Navy by Hon. William McLean, From that time he spent the whole of his active life in theservice of his country, serving with distinction in the War withMexico and in the Civil War.
