For thirteen consecutive years he represented hisportion of the old Bay State in the Legislature at Boston,was a justice of the peace, and the principal man in thesettlement where he resided. As an illustration of hispersonal influence it may here be stated that, by a petitionwritten by him to Governor George Clinton, of New York,he procured the reprieve of Caleb T. Gardner, tried an(fcondemned to be hung for knowingly passing counterfeitmoney, after repeated efforts by the ablest counsel hadfailed to secure his pardon. The facts concerning this are 4e -1^%.
