There should be two 1-inch pipes in the middle coil. For hot water heating it would be better to use IVjinch pipe for houses of this length, unless the top of the boiler is well below the level of the re- turns or unless the system is under pressure, although 1-inch pipe may be used. If the supply of IV^-inch pipe is sufficient, run one flow pipe on each plate and a third three feet below the ridge. There should be three 1%-inch return pipes on each of the side walls and four under the middle bench, or in the walks if solid beds are used. If it is necessary to substitute 1-inch re- turns, three will be required to take the place of two li/^-inch returns. Whether steam or hot water is used, the flows as well as the returns should have a fall of about one inch in ten feet. Even with hot water heat, not over 160 square feet of radiation will be re- quired; consequently, it is evident that a boiler with an 18-inch grate, rated for 300 square feet of radiation, will be amply large.
