Chemistry frontispiece
Chemistry frontispiece. Chemistry is represented by a venerable philosopher seated near a sand bath furnace, in the act of performing the chemical analysis, surrounded by various instruments. Behind him stands a female clothed in a saffron coloured vest, with a coronet upon her head, and a globe in her right hand, attentively observing a young man who is busily employed in melting a diamond by the force of a lens acted upon by the rays of the Sun.
