When the commissioners fromKing Charles were at Boston in 1665, they had a chaplainwith them, but there was no house for public of the inhabitants who were upon the stage in 1686,had never seen a Church of England assembly (Hutchin-son). The time was now come for the strange sight to beexhibited, and for the members of the Episcopal communionto rally under the countenance and influence of the Royalgovernment. It should be stated, too, that the generalcourt had declared in 1677, that no persons should be hin-dered from performing divine service according to the. KINGS CHAPEL, BOSTON KINGS CHAPEL, BOSTON 59 Church of England. The way therefore appeared to laysmooth and open for the Episcopalians to introduce theirforms of worship and government. As Randolph had the chief hand in overturning the oldcharter of the Colony, so was he most active and efficientin establishing an Episcopalian Church here, and procuringthe services of a clergyman from England.
