Davis, 6/29/1928; sold to Mrs. M. M. Van Beuren 7/23/1928 [SS 32301]. Couple stands in front of fountain (R, foreground), 2 children recline (L, middle ground), group of people with musician (L, background) (BRD) narrow with overlapping zig-zag design Abbreviated version of complete composition (see: GCPA 0181849). About 1/3 of right-side of tapestry is missing (fountain portion). Reweaving or modern restoration is apparent just to right of lady's dress that side of field, but not to top. Border is not original, suggesting that this field was cut from a larger hanging. French & Flemish tapestries of similar subject are based on the "Italian Comedy" or "Fêtes Venitiennes". However, Bradshaw produced a totally new suite of scenes based on pictures by Watteau. This scene is based on Watteau's "La Cascade" with some of the children's figures based on "Amusements Champêtres".
