Polling officials seen unloading Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines from a truck to be kept inside a protected room at a distribution center ahead of the upcoming Legislative Assembly elections in the outskirts of Srinagar. The elections to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly take place after a gap of 10 years in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1, with results to be declared on October 8. Jammu and Kashmir has been without an elected government since June 19, 2018, when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) pulled out of its alliance with the People's Democratic Party (PDP) led by Mehbooba Mufti. A year later, the BJP-led government in New Delhi ends the semi-autonomous character of Jammu and Kashmir by abrogating Article 370 of the Indian constitution and by dividing the state into two federally controlled Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
