The Norfolk Broads is a network of mostly navigable rivers and lakes in the English county of Norfolk. They were formed by the flooding of peat workings. Initially thought of as natural features of the landscape, in the 1960s it was proved they were flooded medieval peat excavations from the Middle Ages, when local monasteries began to excavate the peatlands selling fuel to Norwich and Great Yarmouth. When sea levels began to rise, the pits began to flood resulting in the Broads landscape of today, with its windmills, reedbeds and yachts.

The Norfolk Broads is a network of mostly navigable rivers and lakes in the English county of Norfolk. The lakes, ie broads, were formed by the flooding of peat workings. At the time of the illustration, they were regarded as natural features of the landscape. It was only in the 1960s that Dr Joyce Lambert proved that they were artificial, flooded medieval peat excavations from the Middle Ages when local monasteries began to excavate the peatlands selling fuel to Norwich and Great Yarmouth. Then the sea levels began to rise, and the pits began to flood resulting in the Broads landscape of today, with its windmills, reedbeds and yachts.
