In 1898 and 1S99, 1,101 packages of the seedwere distributed by the Secretary of Agriculturethroughout the United States, and upon careful in-vestigation it has proved vastly superior to the com-mon Alfalfa, inasmuch as it withstands extremedrought and cold much better. The climate of Turk-estan is not unlike that of our interiorstates, being far removed from theocean and surrounded by wide ex-panses of dry land. The summers arevery hot and long, and in many placesthe evaporation exceeds the quantity ofmoisture thathas fallen during the year, and here it is that Alfalfagrows and flourishes. We have every reason to be-lieve it will prove equally as valuable in this coun-try.
