Theattacking infantry reached its objective with but minor casualties, except toits liaison battalion, which suffered heavily. Promptly at 11 all firing ceased. Deathlike stillness prevailed. Theguns still projected their tubes defiantly toward the enemy, but the muzzleswere covered and caisson doors were closed. Cannoneers lay sprawled underthe heavens in much-needed sleep, while drivers led their worn horses fromthe damp, cold woods into the open to graze.
