Caption: Dege, Sichuan, China - Jul 2002. A Khampa pilgrim circling the Bakong Sutra Printing Lamasery in Dege - the former Tibetan kingdom of Kham - Which contains the most extensive collection of Buddhist literature in Tibet. The Lamasery is known as the the most important cultural artifact in Tibet. In the words of HH The Dalai Lama; "As Lahsa is the heart religion, Dege is the heart of culture". Converted into a hospital during the Cultural Revolution, the printing house was spared the devastating fate of most monasteries and religious shrines in the area. Now that it is back in operation, pilgrims travel for days to buy the precious crimson bound scriptures, or to pay homage to the knowledge that lies within.
