Cossack Bay, Crimean War. Ships moored at the cattle pier in Cossack Bay, near Balaklava on the Crimean Peninsula in what is now Ukraine. Ashore are horses, tents and supplies of wood. This bay, on the Black Sea, was one of several used by the British forces fighting Russia during the Crimean War (1853-1856). Photographed in 1855 by British photographer Roger Fenton (1819-1869). Fenton, one of the first war photographers, returned from the Crimea with over 350 photographs.
