Cockaigne pole traditional festival in El Sauzal municipality (Tenerife island)

BAJADA DEL ARCO Y LA CUCAÑA: It refers to one of the peculiar customs that goes back to the beginning of the XIX century in this Historical Villa of El Sauzal. The Descent of the Arch is one of the traditions with more playful load and of neighborhood participation. It takes place during one of the great days of the Patron Saint Peter Apostle Festivities and in this celebration, the waiters compete to get the best fruits, vegetables and breads that adorn the wooden Arch, held in the air by a kind of stick. It is true that the adequate and proper material of the Arch refers to eight real elements: Five sticks of aceviño of approximately five centimeters of diameter, two forceful smaller sticks of afollado and great quantity of small sticks of cane, that later are united next to the sticks, with the thread of the plant preventing of the anea. With these units, the last artisan rooted in tradition, Don Nicolás Canino, in the workshop of his house, has built and balanced the structure of this Arch, which acquires a defined triangular shape of almost two meters high, with a rounded finish on its edges and heart-like appearance. At the same time, the three ends of the upper part are suitable for placing the corresponding flags of Tenerife, the Canary Islands and Spain. Although the local experts advocate the convenience of cutting the aceviño trunk at least six months before and during the waning moon, which would correspond to the months of November and December prior to the celebration of the town's main festivities, so that the wood dries properly and the structure achieves the strength and security for which it is necessary. A structure converted into a Traditional Arch with a duration of between seven and eight years. The Arch, as can be seen, has a triangular shape formed by a structure of aceviño, wrapped by a dense curtain of appropriate reed and cut by local artisans for this purpose.
