Salivary gland stone with inflammation. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of the base of the skull of a 52 year old woman (from below) with a swollen parotid gland (upper right). The parotid glands are the largest saliva-producing glands. Here, a salivary duct is blocked by a stone (small, white circle at upper right). Salivary duct stones are a build-up of the mineral components of saliva. They can form as a result of poor oral hygiene or a bacterial infection. Treatment involves removing the stone, either by breaking it and massaging it out, or by surgical removal.
