Soon after his graduation successfully passed thecompetitive examination and wasappointed junior interne in the City Hospital, from whichposition he was promoted to thesenior interneship the same year,which position he held for one year. At the end of that time retired from the service of[he city to associate himself withthe noted surgeon, Dr. A. C. Ber-navs, acting as that gentlemansfirst assistant. The doctor makes a specialty ofsurgery, although a great deal of histime is devoted to a large generalpractice. Dr. Simpson is the lecturer onphysical diagnosis at the St. Louis. College of Physicians and Surgeonsand a member of several medical so-cieties, and has written several pop-ular treatises on suraferv. A. B. SLOAX. Dr. Alfred Baxter Sloan was bornin Cooper County, Missouri, Sep-tember 24, 1827. He received hi;education in the common schools ofMissouri and at the classical schoolsof Prof. William Van Doran of Lex-ington, Rev. F. E. Allen of Inde-pendence and Prof. A. W. Eidingsof Chapel Hill, Mo. He practicedhis profession in Bates and JacksonCounties, Missouri. In 1852 he settled at Harrison-ville, Cass County, where he prac-ticed until the spring of 1861. Hethen went to the Pikes Peak goldregion in Colorado, hauling with oxteams the machinery for a quartzmill across the plains from Leaven-worth, Kan., and in partnershipwith his fath
