Into these three thousand defenceless children had beengathered, three hundred and fifty thousand dollars had been appro-priated to their support for the current year, and the system, whichhe had so sedulously built up, had been adopted by the State andplaced upon a solid foundation. The success of the magnificent workwas now assured. On the thirtieth day of April, 1867, Dr. Burrowes tenure of officehaving expired, his official connection with the soldiers orphans
