Of thevarious forms of anterior protrusion that come to the notice of thepractitioner, the form dating farthest back in point of time is that inwhich a large upper jaw is inherited. In these cases the upper maxilla is too large for the lower andstands out beyond it (Fig. 1). The lower may be quite normal. Whenthere is simply a want of proportion between the two jaws, it is due tothe diminutive or excessive size of one while the other is normal. Thecriterion in these cases must be the facial angle. The upper jaw is 110 Abtheilung XIV: Zahnheilkunde. usually developed in harmony with the skeleton while the lower jawdepends for its size largely upon function, its size being the result ofaccident rather than design. When the upper jaw is normal or smallerthan the lower, the extent of its posterior portion is determined bythe occlusion of the first permanent molar which keeps the alveolarprocesses in permanent relation to each other at this point, and al-. Fis. l. lows freedom of development in front. If the occlusion is not normal, the upper jaw and alveolar process will develop laterally as well, asanteriorly. > $£% The teeth of the anterior columns may either stand vertically orthey may be turned in toward the lower incisors. The latter deflectionis produced by the action of the lips. When the cuspids are in theirnormal position, the upper incisors form a larger arch than the lowerand this permits of their being turned inward, but when the cuspidshave moved so far forward that they are not normally interlockedwith the lower teeth, the incisors are too crowded to permit this. Inthe diagnosis of this form of irregularity, the following points are tobe observed: 1. The straight line from the frontal eminence to the plane ofthe upper maxilla is nearly perpendicular and does not cutthe alveolar arch. Jaws: 2. The antero-posterior diameter of the lowe
