The soil of much of the black prairie land of Texas and other Southern States was formed in this way. The lime rock is only a few feet under the surface. White, grayish, or blue lime rock powdered up and mixed with humus, or rotting vegetable matter, always turns black. These soils, lying where they were formed, are sometimes called sedentary soils. Those moved by ice and water and wind are called transported soils.
