It can, and did, success-fully conduct hotels and a railroad and steamshipline, maintain eating-houses and furnish householdsupplies. After the Panama exhibit it will takeeither a brave or a singularly stupid man to preach. THE GOETHALS OWN IN ACTIOMAttacking a stronghold of the Culebra Slide with a regiment of men and a battery of machines the ancient dread of a paternalistic government. Early in Col. Goethals regime the great depart-ment of engineering and construction was split intothree subdivisions, namely, The Atlantic Division, comprising the canal from 170 PANAMA AND THE CANAL deep water in the Caribbean to, and including, theGatun locks and dam. In all this covered aboutseven miles of the canal only, but one of its mostdifficult and interesting features. The Central Division, including Gatun Lake andthe Culebra Cut to the Pedro Miguel lock, or about32 miles of canal. The Pacific Division, including the Pedro Migueland Mirafiores locks, and the canal from the footof the latter to deep water in the Pacific.
