Tubes for the Generation of X-Rays 97 Regenerative Tubes. Many ways are open to us by which the vacuum of atube may be altered, though the tube itself be hermeti-cally sealed. The following are some methods :— 1. By the application of heat.—Assuming, as wehave done, that air is occluded and condensed in the tubeafter some working, we may to some extent liberateit, and so increase the internal pressure, by warming thetube, either from the outside by means of a Bunsen burneror spirit lamp, or by temporarily forcing such a powerfulcurrent through the tube that the anti-cathode gets incan-. Fig. 48. descent; the former is the more usual method and easierto apply. This treatment, of course, does not presuppose anyparticular design of the tube, and may therefore beuniversally employed with all types. In this classmay be ranged the Double Bulb tube, shown inFig. 48. The distinguishing feature of this type is the bulbarranged behind the working bulb; when the tube ison the pump, the requisite heating of the walls is onlyapplied to the working bulb, with, the result that aftersealing off, there is a certain store of condensed gas clingingto the inner walls of the small bulb, which may either bedriven off into the main bulb (when the vacuum has risen 98 Practical Radiography above the useful degree) by the application of heat to thesmall bulb or preferably by the passage of the dischargeitself through the tube. 2. By the introduction of certain absorbent substancesinto the tube.—The reserve of gas is furnished by somesuch substance as caustic potash, palladium, carbon orperm
