The Tasman Bridge connects the Tasman Highway over the River Derwent at Montagu Bay near Hobart in Tasmania, Australia. When it opened in 1965, the Tasman was the longest prestressed concrete bridge in Australia. The Tasman bridge and highway is named after Dutch discover Abel Janszoon Tasman. He was the first European to discover Van Diemen's Land on 24th November 1642, renamed Tasmania in later years, and confirm Australia as an island continent.
