In the springof 1846 he, together with his parents,left Nauvoo, performing the toilsomejourney to Winter Quarters. Here heremained with his mother while hisfather, Avith the notable band of pio-neers under the leadership of Young, wended their way tothe valley of the Great Salt Lake, ar-riving on July 24, 1847. In the springof 184S his father was called again ona mission to the Eastern States. Hetook his family with him and left themat Cambridgeport, Mass., where Wil-. ford attended school. In 1849, hisfather and mother, with their littleones, again started for Utah, wherethey arrived Oct. 14, 1850. After theirarrival in the Valley he spent most ofhis time until the spring of 1863 underthe direction of his father, buildingbridges, roads and fences, clearingland or assisting in whatever enterprisehe was needed, to improve or build uphis valley home. March 28, 1848, hewas baptized and confirmed at WinterQuarters. He was also ordained aPriest the same day under the handsof his father and Elder John 18, 1856, he received his endow-ments and was ordained an Elder atSalt Lake City. He was ordained aSeventy April 9, 1863, and in March,1863, he left Salt Lake City on a mis-sion to England, returning in the fallof 1866.
