The 95th was the lastregiment to enter Co-runna, the 23rd the lastto leave it. Great confusion existedon board the vessels, andan attempt to transitr themen to their respective ships was prevented by the enemy opening firefrom Lucia. The cables were cut, andthe three hundred transports put to sea on the17th, convoyed by several men-of-war, the oldVictory amongst them, and after cruising aboutin the ofl^ng for two days, they put helm up forEngland, where the army landed in a wretchedcondition. All the clothing of the Rifles was burnedbehind Hythe barracks, in a state that spokevolumes for the misery undergone. The Smallbridgc went ashore near Ushant, andover two hundred of the German Legion weredrowned. Then the newspapers began to raisea disgraceful outcry against the whole expedi-tion, and the good name of Sir John Moore wasplaced under a cloud by men whose information. DEATH OF SIR JOHN MOORE. BATTLES OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY. was false, and whose opinion was of no morevalue than a spent cartridge. We have learned the true state of thingssince then, and ample justice has been renderedto Moores noble character in the subsequenthistories of that glorious period. The last survivor of Corunna, Thomas Palmer,of the 23rd, died at the great age of a htiurired^and was buried at Weston-super-Mare, with fullmilitary honours, in April, i88q—eighty yearsafter his chief was laid to rest with his martialcloak around him.
