Knee arthroscopy. Hands performing a lateral release of the patella (knee cap) during arthroscopic removal of knee cartilage. Lateral release detaches the patella from surrounding soft tissue, giving access to the two pieces of cartilage (the menisci) that line the joint. This procedure is known as a meniscectomy. It is performed when the cartilage has torn or is diseased, causing pain and decreased joint mobility. Arthroscopic procedures are performed using an arthroscope (upper right), inserted through a narrow skin incision. The arthroscope allows surgeons to view, reshape or remove the structures within the joint.
