Eluanbi lighthouse close up with cloudy sky.
Eluanbi lighthouse during typhoon Kammuri. Eluanbi lighthouse is located on Taiwan's southernmost point the Hengchun Peninsula. In the mid 1800's Taiwan's Department of Maritime Affairs began constructing lighthouses and other maritime infrastructure in order to expand the trade business in Taiwan at the time. Eluanbi lighthouse was designed by an English engineer and put into service in 1882 as an armed compound having gun holes in the walls and a trench around it. This was to protect against frequent aboriginal attacks. It has been repaired a few times due to severe battle damage caused by different battles fought in Taiwan. Today it is one of Taiwan's premier tourist attractions. It's still a functional lighthouse and considered to be the brightest lighthouse in Asia.
